Brazil: ACT NOW! Two-week strike in Pernambuco to continue

A strike called by the Pernambuco construction workers’ union (Marreta) has been going on for more than a fortnight. Marreta is affiliated to CONTICOM-CUT, Brazil, and led by Dulcilene de Morais. De Morais has received from the employers’ association, SINDUSCON, a definitive proposal of a 6% wage adjustment, which neither the workers nor the union are willing to accept.

BWI Regional Representative Nilton Freitas has written to the Pernambuco employers’ association, describing the employers’ offer as "unacceptable" because, besides being segmented, it is not sufficient to cover the real wages loss that the workers have suffered over the past 12 months.

The president of the Marreta union has told BWI that the employers’ offer is very low relative to the inflation that has been picking the workers’ pockets.

So BWI is calling for a show of solidarity with the union by signing the sample letter attached below.

Strike in Recife

Union: Construcción de Pernambuco (Marreta)
Source: CONTICOM-CUT
BWI Action: Gustavo Cocentino de Miranda President SINDUSCON-PE The BWI has informed me about the difficulties that have arisen in this year’s pay negotiations between the union, Sindicato de Trabajadores de Construcción Civil y Pesada (Marreta), and the employers’ association, Sindicato de la Industria de la Construcción en el Estado de Pernambuco (SINDUSCON). I support the workers on strike and their union, Marreta, who consider the proposed salary increase of 6%, divided into three successive segments, to be unacceptable. That is not even enough to compensate for the decline in real wages that has occurred over the past 12 months. We are also concerned about the attempt to postpone the negotiations to March, which would further increase the loss in wages. I express my solidarity with the workers of Pernambuco and urge the immediate conclusion of the negotiations in a spirit of good faith and fairness, favourable to the rights of workers to decent pay and decent work. I am looking forward to your understanding in this matter.
